Gaziantep Museum of Culture History

The Gaziantep Museum of Cultural History, housed on the ground floor of the Gaziantep University Library, was created to allow students to present, promote and share the cultural history of the city in which they are studying. The museum presents the archaeology of Gaziantep in a chronological sequence using original cultural assets and documents, and divides the cultural life of the city into various sections such as; “Notable People from Gaziantep”, “Characteristics of Antep Dialect”, “Important Events in City Life”, “Family Life, Daily Life, Special Days”, “Children’s Games and Toys”, “Entertainment and Social Life”, “Photography” and “Karagöz Shadow Puppetry”.

The Gaziantep Museum of Cultural History activities are predominantly aimed at its own students, however it also opened its doors to visitors on 25 December, 2009. Through its use of exhibitions, the museum has revealed the cultural history of Gaziantep, reminding residents of the city of their past, and also educating foreign visitors about the city.

The museum houses collections of cultural assets that reflect the life styles, handcrafts, domestic skills and daily life routines of the Gaziantep people through the ages from the 12th century to present times.

Among the exhibits is an important collection of fossils that have been found in and around Gaziantep and been donated to the museum. The museum also houses a laboratory/work shop section creating a practical space in which archaeology students can conduct their studies in museology.
